Locksmith FAQs — British Columbia

Updated June 2026
Asked every day.

The questions our dispatch line hears most, answered straight. If yours isn't here, call 778.907.9808 — a person picks up, 24/7.

How fast can a locksmith get to me?
In our eight covered cities, an emergency truck is typically on-site in 20–30 minutes. Dispatch gives you a real arrival window on the phone before you commit — if traffic or call volume pushes that out, you'll hear it upfront, not after an hour of waiting.
How much does a locksmith cost in BC?
It depends on the job, but the structure is always the same with us: you get a quoted price on the phone before anyone is dispatched, and that's the price on the invoice. Standard lockouts and rekeys sit at the lower end; automotive key programming varies with the vehicle's electronics; commercial systems are quoted per door. Be wary of anyone advertising a too-good "$19 service call" — that number famously grows on arrival. Your city's site lists typical local ranges.
Are your locksmiths licensed?
Yes — every technician in every city carries a locksmith licence under BC's Security Services Act, which also requires a criminal record check. We renew checks annually on top of that, carry $5M commercial liability insurance, and are registered with WorkSafeBC. Ask the tech to show credentials; they carry them.
Will you damage my lock or door getting me in?
Almost never. Non-destructive entry — picking, bypassing, decoding — is always the first approach, and it succeeds in the large majority of lockouts. If a lock genuinely has to be drilled (some high-security cylinders are designed that way), you'll be told before it happens, with the replacement cost included in the quote.
Which cities do you cover?
Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond, Coquitlam, North Vancouver, Langley, and White Rock — each with its own team and website. Calls from neighbouring communities like Delta, New Westminster, Port Moody, and Maple Ridge are handled by the closest team. See the full map on the cities page.
Can you make a car key if I've lost all of mine?
Yes. All-keys-lost is routine work for our automotive techs: we cut and program transponder keys and fobs for most makes on-site, so the car doesn't need to be towed to a dealership. Have your registration or proof of ownership ready — we verify before cutting, every time.
Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving in?
Rekey, usually. It keeps your existing hardware and changes which key operates it — faster and cheaper than replacement, and it lets us key every door to a single key. Replace instead when the hardware itself is worn, low-grade, or you want to upgrade to a smart lock or restricted keyway.
Do you work with strata and property managers?
Constantly. Building rekeys scheduled around residents, documented master key systems, access control, and code-compliant exit hardware are core commercial work in every city. For multi-building portfolios that span cities, the head office can quote it as one account — email [email protected].
Is the 3 a.m. price different from the 3 p.m. price?
After-hours emergency calls carry a higher call-out rate than scheduled daytime work — that's standard in the trade and we won't pretend otherwise. What doesn't change is the process: the full price is quoted on the phone before the truck rolls, at any hour.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
In BC, ask for their Security Services Act licence — legitimate locksmiths carry it and show it without friction. Check that the business has a real local address and consistent phone number, and that reviews mention the same company name you called. A marked truck and an upfront quote are good signs; a cash-only "estimate" that triples on arrival is not.
Do you install smart locks, and which ones?
Yes, across all cities. We install and configure the major residential platforms and steer you toward models that handle BC's wet coastal weather and your door's actual condition — a smart lock on a misaligned door is a service call waiting to happen, so we fix the door first.
How do I open a Fast Locksmith in my city?
That's the franchise page. Short version: one owner-operator per territory, central 24/7 dispatch, your own ranked city website, training, and supplier accounts. Territories are open across BC, Alberta, and beyond — email [email protected] with your city.
